Hello World
So, yeah. I’m Meghan. I’m a public-school Transition Coordinator. What does that mean? I help people find things, remember things and do things. In other words, I help families prepare (as much as possible) for the future.
To be honest, sometimes, that planning can feel…encompassing. There is a lot to it, but I try to remind everyone that if you do it in slow, gradual steps, it can be manageable; that’s of course while you’re in school. Once your student leaves the “comfort” of the school system and all the things that need to be done can turn into what feels like a never-ending tornado.
I’m here to tell you though; you’re not alone. There are other families who are going through this and at the same time you are. How do you find them? I recommend starting at Transition Fairs and working your way out. There are lots of people who dismiss social media and I’m not saying I’m a HUGE fan, but I have to tell you; there are so many Facebook groups and Twitter accounts that are passing along information about the transition process and these CAN BE helpful. You’re free to share as much (or as little) as you feel comfortable. I know other families who have made great connections with other families through social media in order to collaborate for their young adults. No one is going to chastise you if you don’t use them, just don’t forget they are there.
Finally, if you didn’t already know; I helped build a website that focuses exclusively on the post-secondary transition process. I know, I know, it's how you found this blog. But seriously, it is just “chock-full” of information! From Where to Start, to DDA, info on Self Directed Services, to Transition Planning Guides; there really is a lot to discover. And we have a lot more to share. I just wanted to throw this out there, first. I do plan on coming back and writing more. I just wanted to introduce myself.
We’ll talk more soon.
